The Gift of Giving
One of the most important goals of a business is profitability. Ensuring that revenue exceeds expenses is key to the maintenance and perseverance of any business. And although a financial yield is clearly necessary, it isn’t always the most important objective for a business to possess. Sometimes, the bottom line transcends profit, especially when a meaningful opportunity to give back to the community that supports one’s business arises.
This was the case for Cupcake Junkie Bakery just this past weekend. When the opportunity to assist a most worthy cause presented itself, Cupcake Junkie was honoured to lend its support, and cupcakes, to the fundraising endeavour.
“#Cupcakes4Cameron” as it was termed, was an all-day, in-store event for which Cupcake Junkie agreed to donate all of the proceeds from its chocolate cupcake (chosen by Cameron) sales to help fund a life changing surgical procedure for 9 year old Cameron, who has struggled his entire life with the physical realities of Cerebral Palsy.
In constant pain, and already in need of wheelchair support, Cameron is a candidate for Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy surgery, a procedure pioneered by Dr. T. S. Park, a neurosurgeon operating out of a hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. SDR surgery rewires the nerves in the spine relieving the spasticity that Cerebral Palsy causes, and in turn, gives someone like Cameron, the ability to walk without any assistance.
Unfortunately, as one would expect, the expenses associated with the execution of such a procedure far surpass what most families can afford. Willing to do whatever necessary, Cameron’s family and community began fundraising, in any and all manners possible, in a dedicated attempt to raise the money needed for Cameron’s SDR surgery.
When the owners and staff of Cupcake Junkie were approached, they considered it a privilege to contribute their efforts, product, and location for the day to this most deserving cause.
Although a business needs to make a profit in order to survive, it also needs to consider the people and community that feed this financial gain. Without this support a business can not grow and thrive. When any business, big or small, is offered an opportunity to give back to the collective, it is also being offered the opportunity to prove its worth and place in the community, and in turn, its value.
